I am always interested in hearing about other people's methods that they use while on the job. So I am going to share my methods and I'd appreciate it if you left a comment to share your methods or just leave some feedback to tell me what you think about my methods. So here it goes. 1. I first like to open up Add/Remove Programs and just go through and rip through all kinds of trash. Go through and uninstall all the non-important stuff. I really wouldn't be too worried when removing programs because the average user doesn't even use half of the crap that they install over time. Uninstall trialware, uninstall those programs that tell you to buy stuff, uninstall outdated software, and uninstall software that is rarely used and old. 2. I will then install and run Ccleaner. 3. Install Spybot - Search and Destroy. Update it and run the immunization. Also use Spybot's startup tool to disable unecessary programs from running on startup. 4. Right-click My Computer and select Properties.Then go to the Advanced Tab and disable error-reporting. This disables the "do you want to send this error to Microsoft" window.
5. Right-click on their hard drive and select Properties. Disable indexing service. 6. Run services.msc and disable the following: Distributed Link Tracking Error Reporting Service Indexing Service IPSec Services (Don't disable if the computer accesses a VPN) Logical disk manager Secondary Logon Security Accounts Manager TCP/IP NetBIOS Helper WebClient Wireless Zero Configuration (Do not disable if the computer uses a wireless card [Laptops])Set the following services to manual: Help and Support Security Center 7. Check for outdated Norton, McAfee, or other dumb security suite. Recommend AVG, Super Anti-Spyware, and Comodo. Uninstall old software and install new software with user permission.8. After you finish up all of this, run Ccleaner again and also run the registry cleaner in Ccleaner until everything checks out fine. Now that is all for the tuneup process. Now for a little bit about the physical PC cleaning process. I take the computer outside to do the cleaning so that I don't get dust all over the customer's room. I always bring a towel with me to lay the computer down onto so that the computer doesn't make contact with the ground and get scratched. I know some people are going to argue against me, but I like to use a portable air compressor for cleaning. I make sure the compressor is set at about 35psi and start blowing all the dust out. Clear the fans, heatsink, motherboard, small compartments where dust can get trapped, any intake vents, and anywhere else where dust can build up. If you need to conserve air to clean out multiple computers, I'd just spray the fans, heatsink, and vents. Once you're done with that, wipe out any leftover dust with a small cloth. Don't spend too much time wiping it all out, you'll never get all of the dust out of there. Once that is all cleaned out, I hook up their computer again and make sure it still runs. =P I will then set the hard drive to defrag if it needs to be defragged. Which it most likely will not need. If I am on-site, this is where I would stop. But if I had the computer at home, I would also install all Microsoft updates and update any big software products.
